History and value
Szárkő (with volcanic neck winter and lava flow remains): the mountain peak rising above the Gortva steppe near Ajnácskő is one of the most characteristic basalt column excavations of the mountains. The 35-60 cm thick columns reach a height of 50 m and surface in the form of an inverted fan. They are almost perpendicular around the apex, while in the lower parts they show an inclination of 40-60 ° towards the center of the neck. Immediately at the bottom of the excavation, the columns pass into benches that are perpendicular to the columns. This refers to the slope of the inner wall of the former crater. The volcanic chimney (neck) opened into an approx. 150 meters diameter crater filled with basalt lava. In places, especially at the southern peak, the original breccia filling of the chimney with reddish-brown lava fragments has been preserved (Gaál and Konečný 1995). Behind the southern peak, on the narrow ridge, a vertical separation of basalt can be observed, suggesting a basalt lode. Through this, the lava reached the surface and flowed north. Remains of the approximately 1.5 km long spilled lava flood can be found around the main peak (486 m), then on the Suhaj Stone and the Cserép Stone (414 m). The vertical thick columnar separation of basalt lava prices is striking. The radiometric age of basalt is 4.63 ± 0.2 million years on the Szár Stone and 4.1 ± 0.3 million years on the Cserép Stone (Balogh in Konečný et al. 1995).
