The Big Hardes
The Big Hardes
(Nagy Hardes; volcanic neck): a characteristically prominent rocky cone tip 4.5 kms southwest of Fülek. Volcanic chimney remnant, which in the upper part passes into a maar-type crater (lava root zone - Konečný et al. 2004). This is evidenced by the well-observed columnar separation of the basalt, with sloping columns perpendicular to the former wall of the crater. The quarry open at the base of the neck also reveals slaggy chimney breccas with lodes, a remnant of freatomagmatic eruptions. The radiometric age of basalt is 5.43 ± 0.4 million years (Konečný et al. 1995).

A field road from the village Horná Baba part leads to the site.Degree of protection: 1
