2023/1 4. Bird rescue station

Today I was allowed to visit the bird rescue station, which is located directly on the grounds of the directorate. And, of course, its inhabitants!

In the rescue centre, injured birds are nursed back to health and, in the best case, released back into the wild. Last year, about 500 birds were taken in here, of which about 90 % could be released back into the wild. Some patients, however, have to stay permanently in the sanctuary, as they would unfortunately no longer be able to survive in the wild, for example, because they can no longer fly or have gone blind.

At the moment, buzzards, falcons, owls (I was even allowed to pet one of them), two storks and a raven are in the sanctuary, which has also officially functioned as a bird rescue station for three years now.

In addition, other animals such as bats, turtles, raccoons or other creatures that do not typically occur naturally in the Bükk National Park are also taken in.

Today's task was to build a small enclosure for one of the storks so that it could do its rounds outside in summer. Unfortunately, the stork can no longer fly or walk properly, so releasing it back into the wild is impossible. With the new enclosure, he can at least enjoy the sun's rays as soon as the weather permits it!
