European Geoparks Week and Pentecost in the transnational Palóc Geopark

Celebrating its 11th anniversary, the members of the regional network of UNESCO Global Geoparks, the European Geoparks, commemorate the geological heritage of our old continent every year in late spring and early summer, to which the Ipolytarnóc Relics will also join between May 23 and June 7 , 2026 .

But in the heart of the Slovak-Hungarian Palóc Geopark, which has been a member of the Global Geoparks Network for 16 years, in Hollókő and Szentkút, there will also be interesting programs partly related to Pentecost. What is encouraging news is that the Bükk National Park Directorate will maintain the discount introduced last year for the residents of the geopark for visiting the Geological Educational Trail in Ipolytarnóc.

The Slovak-Hungarian, transnational Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark celebrates its geological and cultural heritage and traditions with many interesting programs. Its gateway is our Miocene Park, where traces of former seas and volcanic disasters can be seen during tours led by experts from the Bükk National Park Directorate. In addition to the dynamic life of our Earth and climate changes, participants can also learn about the latest paleontological discoveries of the Ancient Pompeii on the geological educational trail. On the educational trail, where organized guided tours began 40 years ago, the Bükk National Park Directorate continues to provide the residents of the Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark with the discounted entrance fee introduced last year , and with a professional ticket (500 HUF/person) they can participate in guided tours on the world-famous Geological Educational Trail.

During the long Pentecost weekend, we welcomed visitors with a flea market , children with face painting and crafts . On May 25, Whit Monday, from 10:00 to 15:00, a free "Marsh Tour" program with the Vidra Verda rolling nature diver was provided, which openned a window on the aquatic wildlife of the Miocene forest for interested individuals, families and groups alike. The next day, the events were partially moved to Baglyaskő, where the academic competition of Slovak and Hungarian geopark schools took place.

In honor of European Geoparks Week, the Miocene Park is also organizing other special, thematic programs that are worth participating in.

On June 1st, Volcano Day is celebrated all over Europe , which has a tradition with Fossils. (Link to a previous report) Since this day falls on a public holiday Monday this year, a thematic program starting at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday, May 30th will commemorate the geopark's 20 million years of extremely diverse volcanism . During the thematic program , interested parties can take part in a special guided tour focusing on volcanic formations , while visiting the Miocene Forest and the Geological Nature Trail . Only those who have registered in advance can take part in the guided tour (3,500 HUF/person). You can indicate your intention to participate in a message sent to the email address ipolytarnoc@bnpi.hu by May 29th, or you can also purchase tickets online via this interface. The special event is also related to the publication of the multilingual volcanic legendarium of the European Geoparks, including the contemporary message of the myth associated with the petrified tree of our geopark's paleontological center (Ipolytarnóc Fossils).

The book can also be downloaded via this link , which is worth it because it also contains the captivating tales of the two other Hungarian UNESCO Global Geoparks. The ceremonial presentation of the book took place on May 29th, at the Szeleta Park Visitor Center , as part of a scientific lecture session, starting at 12 noon .

The international presentation of the book will be held by the Volcanology Working Group of the European Geopark Network in a webinar organized by the El Hierro UGGp on June 1st, starting at 6 pm Central European Time.
