6 Höhlenbesichtigungen mit den Freiwilligen aus dem Kiskunság Nationalpark

Visiting caves with the volunteers from Kiskunság National Park

From the 27th of November until the 4th of December 2022, the two volunteers working at Kiskunság National Park visited us. We did not only work together but got the chance to see some caves. Altogether, there are more than 1200 known caves in the Bükk Mountains, and they have a high value.

On the 29th of November 2022, our contact person at the geopark Balázs took us to Lillafüred, where we participated in a guided tour into the Anna-Cave, a travertine cave. Before entering, we looked at the Szinva-Waterfall right next to the entry. As we noticed inside, the water running from the waterfall into the cave has the effect that the roots of trees and remnants of other plants are covered by travertine being carried by this water. The length of the cave is 400 m. Afterwards, we went to the Szent István-Cave, which is also in Lillafüred, but is much longer than the Anna-Cave, with a length of 1514 m. In addition, this strictly protected cave is a dripstone cave. A specific part of the cave cannot be entered by visitors at all. This part is used by hospitals and therapy groups because of its immaculate air.

The 30th of November 2022 began with collecting data on trees that are particularly important for the forest's biodiversity. Afterwards, the ranger Roland drove to Cserépfalu with us. From there, we went up to the Szeleta-Cave, which is freely accessible for visitors after a little challenging way up to the entry. Its unique value lies in prehistoric findings, which archaeologists gathered during excavations.
