History and value

The Haraszt Hill quarry next to Rátka uniquely explores the oldest so-called, 2 million years ago, under the Terbeléd lava flood. Quaternary sediments from the Biber age. These are sandy-pebble sediments of an ancient valley, which was once 100 meters above the base of today's Bena Valley. There was also a reddish soil layer burnt by the hot basalt lava. The hard basalt covering the excavation protected these layers from subsequent decay and could therefore remain as the oldest Quaternary (Pleistocene) sediments of the mountains. The quarry is temporarily produced, but the geological site is outside the quarry area.
